G’day mate! My name is Diana Chowdhury and I’ll be your program
manager for Outbound Australia! I’m a University of Massachusetts
graduate from the heart of Boston. I have recently moved to Austin,
Texas to work for Alliance Abroad Group. I was relocated from Sydney,
Down Under. Junior year of my undergrad, many of my friends studied
abroad in the most gorgeous places. I missed out on this opportunity.
After countless days of Facebook stalking their wild photos, I thought
to myself- I need an adventure.
Prior to my arrival Down Under, I was eager to cuddle a koala and see a Tasmanian devil. My fall semester of senior year in September 2010, I studied abroad at the International College of Management, Sydney. I accomplished nearly half of my extensive bucket list in just weeks. Before I knew it my bucket was empty, but my heart was full. I was not ready to go home. I extended my stay in Australia because I could not imagine switching gears from surfing to shoveling. The time had come and graduation day was calling. I promised myself I’d be back.
After graduation, I became more and more discouraged with job searching. I felt like there were no opportunities for me in the States. I started planning and saving for Australia. I was in search for a new experience. As a study abroad student, I made sure to engage in every single fun, tourist activity I could be a part of. I fell in love with the lifestyle and I wanted to experience it as an Aussie not a tourist. I craved the idea of emerging more deeply in to Aussie culture. I desired a more hands on learning experience with the locals. I pondered, what could be a better cultural immersion than actually working with the Sheilas and Blokes?
Finding work on your own in Australia can be just as much of a struggle as in the States. I was pretty worried about how I’d make ends meet once I landed overseas. It was difficult looking for a place to live and a stable income. This process can be time consuming and overwhelming. Here, at Alliance Abroad Group, we will take that weight off your shoulders.
Luckily, the program I studied abroad with offered me a position. I found a place to live with my Aussie friends and I made it work. I was fortunate to have fostered these long term relationships. However, a friend of mine who also relocated to Australia was not as lucky. This was her first visit to Australia and she did not have the resources I did. She is still looking for a job, months later.
Ideally, I would have been ecstatic if something like this Work Experience Australia program existed during my experience. This is a program that walks you through the application, interview, and your entire stay Down Under. The fact that you are guaranteed a high end job position is the icing on the cake. There is no other program like it and I’m proud to be part of it.
I will be working closely with you to discuss any questions and concerns you may have. Ask us on Facebook! You can ask me anything and everything. From “What will my accommodation look like?” to “What does vegemite taste like?” I’ve been there. I’ll be your backbone.
